Early Life and Education

Raised in suburban Detroit, Ranon Teller is the second of three children born to Rabbi Dr. Gerald Teller and Judy Teller. Growing up in a household rooted in Orthodox Jewish traditions, he developed an early connection to Jewish faith and learning. He attended Orthodox Day School before continuing his education at Skokie Yeshiva High School outside Chicago. After high school, he moved to Israel to study at an Orthodox yeshiva, focusing on advanced Talmudic studies, Jewish philosophy, theology, and sacred texts.

Secular Career Beginnings

During his studies in Israel, Rabbi Teller began questioning aspects of the Orthodox traditions that had raised him. He eventually returned to Chicago, where he explored new interests in writing and music. He earned a degree in television writing from Columbia College Chicago and entered the television industry, writing and producing the Sunday morning news program This Week with Wanda Wells. His interest in blues music also grew during this period. After learning guitar, he joined a rhythm-and-blues band that performed on Chicago's historic Maxwell Street. Despite pursuing these interests, his connection to Judaism remained strong.

Rediscovering Judaism

In 1996, Ranon Teller returned to Israel to explore different approaches to Jewish spirituality and religious practice. He became interested in contemporary Chasidic music and the teachings of Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi. His studies at the Conservative rabbinical school in Jerusalem, combined with an intensive experiential Jewish education program, helped him recognize his calling toward Jewish leadership. In 1998, he returned to the United States and enrolled at the University of Judaism in Los Angeles, where he pursued Jewish education and rabbinic studies.

The Road to Becoming a Rabbi

Rabbi Teller continued developing his knowledge of Jewish education, religious texts, and community leadership. In 2000, he earned a master's degree in education from the Fingerhut School of Education and received the school's Award for Outstanding Achievement. In 2002, he completed his rabbinic studies and was ordained as a rabbi. His academic accomplishments earned him the Chancellor's Award for Academic Excellence and the Ziegler School Award for Excellence in Talmudic Studies.

Early Career and Leadership in St. Louis

Rabbi Teller began his rabbinic career at Congregation B'nai Amoona in St. Louis, serving as associate rabbi from 2002 to 2005. During a period of senior leadership changes, he helped provide the congregation with direction and stability. He introduced contemporary, interactive prayer services and developed stronger connections with young families. His thoughtful approach to worship and community involvement helped members stay engaged during the transition.

Moving to Houston

In 2005, Rabbi Ranon Teller became the senior rabbi of Congregation Brith Shalom in Houston. He also contributed to the synagogue's financial development, helping secure a $1.5 million endowment and a $5 million gift toward a building renovation campaign.

He has collaborated with organizations including the Houston Food Bank, SEARCH Homeless Services, and the Food and Faith Collaborative. Family Life

Rabbi Teller shares his life with his wife, Vicki Teller, and their four children: Ariella, Maya, Jake, and Nava. His daughter Nava has expressed interest in following the family's rabbinic tradition, inspired by her father and grandfather. The family also has a beloved dog named Jessie Afikoman. He is an enthusiastic nonfiction reader, particularly biographies and books that explore human behavior. He also enjoys juggling, magic, hiking, and backpacking. He has also contributed articles to Kolot magazine, the Jewish Herald-Voice, and the Jewish Journal, and co-authored the book Peaceful Bones.
